Ottawa is the capital of Canada and the Canadian federal parliament residence, namesake river port on the right and the Rideau Canal, with a metropolitan area population of 1,168,788 inhabitants (2006).
The city is located in Eastern Ontario, bordering the province of Quebec. Ottawa is a metropolis as large as Montreal or Toronto. In terms of population, it lags behind other Canadian cities such as Vancouver or Calgary. It forms together with a single urban agglomeration Carleton, the fourth largest in Canada, numbering over a million inhabitants. In Ottawa, only a quarter of the population is francophone. This supremacy of English is undeniable.
Capital Canada owes its name to a tribe of Indians who adopted a pacifist attitude towards whites. These tribes were nicknamed the rest of the Indian tribes “Ottawa”, meaning “those who trade with foreigners”. Nobody has forgotten the first inhabitants of the area present capital, which arose due to the city. As a sign of respect for their Indian statue was erected on its pedestal in Ottawa on the cover of greenery.
